So few Core Techs survived the Black Lake Incident that some don’t believe they exist at all, that perhaps they never existed, and were simply a tool used by the powers that be to bring down the successful attempts of the scientists of Old Europa to create a benevolent AI.

The streets of the NEO-Budapest are thick with rumour, conspiracy theories that churn ideas, making the Core Techs, to most, nothing more than a myth, but those who know, know. Elite bands of metaverse hackers, shroomworld pyschonauts and meatworld warriors search for the truth about what happened when the old powers initiated the Lincoln Contingency, what went down on the day of the Black Lake Incident, and what the Core Techs did.

Few get very far in their searches, but some find a key to a door that brings them a step closer to understanding not what happened, but how they will never know what happened. The Core Techs that remain keep their eyes open and ears close to the ground, occasionally finding a hacker or psychonaut that has pushed through the door and come out the other side.

Relentless Joe is one of these, a metaverse hacker that was noticed by the Core Techs when he pierced a thick slab of protective algo surrounding the Children of AI’s code cores. Contacted by White Mayhem, who brought them under their wing to head up the Core Techs as second in command, Joe is here to utilise his skills as an elite hacker to fight the rise of AI, recruit for the Core Techs, and build the legend through the underworld networks.
